Report by Ken Borrie
Our first-ever concert at Harrison Hot Springs took place on a
lovely hot, sunny afternoon – with just enough breeze to make it
interesting for the directors and players, as music sheets and music
stands would sometimes fly off mid-selection. Despite occasional
competition from motor-bikes, the 40 Delta Music Makers players were
able to provide a memorable concert for spectators, some of whom stayed
for the full 90 minutes.

Music Director Curt Jantzen started the concert with Tijuana Brass in Concert,
a medley of famous Herb Alpert tunes from the 1960s and '70s.
Anne Cumpston soloed on Tijuana Taxi Horn. This was followed by Blue Tango, probably Leroy Anderson's most famous composition, and a favourite at the Boston Pops.
After the Canadian classic Donkey Riding, Assistant Music Director (and clarinetist) Margaret Behenna sang two of the 5 tunes featured in Highlights from Les Miserables;
"I Dreamed a Dream" and "On My Own". Then Curt joined his wife
Jhandie in the Tuba section, while Margaret took the director's
baton for the next 3 pieces.
The New Orleans-style Just a Closer Walk With Thee,
by the Canadian Brass, starts with a slow, mournful dirge-like funeral
procession from the church to the cemetery, followed by the exuberant
Dixieland jazz style, representing a happy send-off to a better life.
After the march Sons of Veterans by Karl L. King, featuring trumpet soloist Wilf Radke, the band played two selections from An English Sea Song Suite, "The Saucy Arethusa", and "Jack's the Lad", more commonly known as "The Sailor's Hornpipe".
Curt directed Folk Songs from the British Isles, featuring a trumpet solo by Ron McClelland, and ABBA On Broadway, a medley of 6 ABBA hits from the 1970s. Then Margaret returned to direct Gabriel’s Oboe featuring Lucy Williams on oboe, and The Great Waldo Pepper March, the theme tune to the Robert Redford movie of the same name.
Margaret sang one more vocal number, accompanied by the DMM in the George & Ira Gershwin melody They Can’t Take That Away from Me, before the band's final toe-tapping Funiculi Funicula concluded the concert on a happy note.
