Whistler Performance Weekend
September 22-24, 2000
The Hills are Alive With the Sounds of Delta

by Roland Selby (Tenor Saxophone)

Whistler, to most skiers, is a name that conjures up visions of long, fast ski runs and the best accommodation, equipment shops, artsy boutiques and après-ski social life in North America. And justifiably so - International ski magazines regularly declare this to be the case.

However, what does the name Whistler mean on a sunny weekend in late September when there is no snow on the slopes?

Well, for starters, all of the amenities are still there, so the setting, under clear blue early-autumn skies is a perfect place to relax and enjoy life - and - for music in the Village Square.

About forty Delta Music Makers and as many family and friends – “band aides” as they are affectionately known – traveled to Whistler on Friday, September 22nd to perform concerts on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

The Whistler Village Inn + Suites was an excellent host to the entire group and provided much help in providing chairs and manpower for the venue set-up.

One highlight of the weekend was the Saturday night “pot luck” supper, which was held in a conference room supplied by the hotel. Each band member brought a menu item and the buffet was a gourmand’s delight. The occasion also turned out to be a party to celebrate Jhandi Jantzen’s birthday (no numbers, please!) – complete with cake and candles.

Perfect warm sunny weather made for ideal conditions (and some sunburned faces) for the concerts and ensured large crowds of obviously happy listeners.

I am sure everyone who was there looks forward to doing this again and those who were not able to attend will be planning for next time.

Congratulations and thanks to Curt Jantzen and Hugh Martell for the great organizational efforts that gave us all the chance to enjoy such a rewarding experience.
